An auxiliary cooling-water pump moves from standby to regular duty. Its bearing-temperature trend rises during a period with different ambient conditions and longer operating hours.

The proposed view would compare similar duty and load windows, place available vibration readings beside the temperature trend and identify a recent sensor replacement. Missing condition data would remain explicit.

A reliability engineer decides whether the evidence warrants further investigation. Operations confirms the duty history; the maintenance planner owns any approved follow-up through the site’s existing work process.

    Operations and reliability select one pump or motor, the historical question and permitted observation point. Confirm who owns protection, inspection and maintenance decisions.

    Build comparable observation windows

    Align available condition measurements with duty and load. Distinguish route-based readings from continuous sensors and retain outages and measurement changes.

    Replay documented events

    Evaluate candidate advisories against known service events and ordinary duty changes. Count both missed evidence and reviews created by harmless operating differences.

    The reliability engineer records a disposition; operations and maintenance confirm the supporting context. Evaluate usefulness and review burden before extending asset coverage.

Observed operating hours with the agreed duty, load and measurement context available, divided by eligible operating hours. Report excluded startup and incomplete windows separately.
02Unnecessary review burden
Advisories judged unhelpful by the reliability reviewer per 100 evaluated operating hours, with reviewer minutes recorded alongside the count. The denominator is a reporting convention, not a target.
03Evidence-to-disposition completeness
Reviewed advisories with traceable condition data, relevant work history and an explicit engineer disposition. Also count documented events that were missed.

THE OPERATING BOUNDARY

Be precise about the scope.

Protection remains independent

Use an approved read-only export or observation interface. Do not alter alarms, trips, interlocks, process setpoints or the site’s existing protection and inspection arrangements.

A trend does not authorize work

HSE maintenance guidance emphasizes procedures, competence and communication between maintenance and operations. A proposed advisory cannot issue a permit, clear equipment for work or return an asset to service.

No remaining-life promise

The study would evaluate whether evidence is useful to reviewers. It would not establish failure prediction, avoided downtime or a safe operating interval. Source guidance is planning context, not a site-specific legal assessment.

No. The proposed study is supplemental observation. It does not replace plant controls, protection systems or existing operating procedures.

Has RAIN been validated at an oil-and-gas site?

No field deployment is claimed. Suitability, source access and evaluation would need to be established through a separately scoped study.
